Court orders terror suspect to be hanged

The supreme court in Bangladesh has upheld the death sentence on the leader of the largest    Islamist party for crime against humanity  during the country's struggle for independence paving the way for his execution within a few months.

The court dismissed an appeal by Motiur Rahman Nizami head of the Jamaat e lslam party, who was convicted for murder, rape and orchestrating the killings of top intellectuals when he was a militia leader during the conflict. "The court upheld the death sentence in three out of four charges" prosecutor Tureen Afroz said.

Nizami 72, Jamat leader since the year 2000 and a minister in a former Islamist allied government of 2001-2006 will face the gallows within a few weeks unless is case is reviewed by the same court or he is granted clemency by the President.So far three senior Jamaat officials and key opposition leaders have been executed since 2013 for war crimes.
